I took this beautiful photograph in the springtime when I was on a nature hike in Kings Canyon California. This lovely bright colored orange Monarch butterfly was feeding on these yellow flowers in a lush green meadow. There were no people around to scare off this one elegant butterfly, so I was able to get a close-up shot of him. I love the tranquil feeling of the shot, and being able to watch this magnificent butterfly go from flower to flower enjoying the sun on it�s wings.
FYI: One of the best-known butterfly species, the beautiful monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is renowned for its spectacular, long-distance annual migrations. The adult monarch butterfly is brightly colored, with orange upper wings, interlaced with black veins and surrounded by a wide, black border marked with numerous white spots. While the striking coloration of the upper wings serves as a visual warning to predators that this species is poisonous, the undersurface of the wings is duller orange, and helps to camouflage this species against tree.
